Upplýsingaskilti vígt við leiði Ingunnar Einarsdóttur frumkvöðuls í dýravernd

August 27th marks the 175th anniversary of the birth of Ingunn Einarsdóttir, a pioneer in animal welfare. On that occasion, an informational plaque will be unveiled by her resting place in Hólavallagarður on August 27th at 2:30 PM.

Ingunn Einarsdóttir played a major role in bringing about reforms for the benefit of animals in the early years of animal welfare in Iceland. She was one of the founders of the Animal welfare organisation of Iceland (now the Animal Welfare Association of Iceland) in 1914 and was among it‘s first board members. Ingunn pioneered the publishing of the magazine Dýraverndarann in 1915, which raised an ever-growing understanding among the public about animals and their welfare. She encouraged the organisation to open a shelter for horses in Reykjavík in 1918, which became the country’s first animal shelter and animal hospital.
