Sanna Magdalena Mörtudóttir, city council presidnt, lays a weath on Bríet Bjarnhéðinsdóttir’s grave in Hólavallagarður Cemetary, to commemorate the Icelandic Day of Women’s Rights, June 19th.

Bríet Bjarnhéðinsdóttir was one of the primary leaders in the women’s rights movement and one of the biggest influencers of the democratic development of Iceland. She was one of the founders of the Icelandic Women’s Rights Association and served as its first president, from 1907 to 1928. The aim oft the IWRA was to ensure that women’s access to politics was equal to men; voting rights, eligibility, and working rights equal to men.
