Ásta the Painter

Ásta Kristín Árnadóttir from Narfakot in Innri-Njarðvík was unafraid to challenge deeply rooted traditions regarding the social role of women. In 1907, she completed her journeyman’s examination in painting, becoming the first Icelandic woman to qualify in a trade. Three years later, she received her master’s certification—again the first woman and Icelander to do so.

Ásta was a trailblazer for women. She possessed unwavering courage and self-confidence, studying and working in many parts of the world. It is therefore fitting to highlight Ásta’s story now, half a century after the Women’s Strike of 1975. The year 2025 has been dedicated to the fight for equality and the recognition of women’s contributions.

An exhibition on Ásta the Painter opens in the Bíósalur at Duus Museum on Thursday, September 4th at 18:00, as part of the Ljósanótt Festival in Reykjanesbær. The exhibition is a collaboration between Duus Museum and the Reykjanesbær Heritage Museum. Curator: Inga Þórey Jóhannsdóttir.

The exhibition runs through November. It is supported by FIT – the Association of Industrial and Technical Trades, Sérefni, and Húsasmiðjan.
