Steina – A Pioneer of Digital Art
Steina is a true pioneer of digital media art, whose work has profoundly influenced generations of artists around the world.
For more than half a century, she has created video works, performances, and installations that explore the creative potential of electronic technology. Through her experiments, she has developed what she herself calls “machine vision” — a way of seeing the world through the eyes of technology.
Born in Reykjavík in 1940, Steina originally trained as a violinist. In 1969, she picked up a Sony Portapak video camera — a cutting-edge tool at the time — and began experimenting with this new and unexplored medium.
The exhibition Steina: Time Travel offers an overview of her work from the beginning, highlighting the role of play, sound, and motion in her groundbreaking creations.
Steina continually challenges the boundaries of human perception and imagination. As she has said herself, her artistic mission is “to reveal, through the eye of technology, what would otherwise remain unseen.”
