The Third Shift – Mental Labour

The Invisible Management of Home Life – The “Third Shift”

Women in Iceland — as in much of the world — work longer weeks than men, once both paid and unpaid labor are taken into account. Beyond their jobs, women still perform the majority of household tasks, childcare, and the mental management of family life — what is often called the third shift.

Men tend to perceive the division of labor at home as more equal than women do. But behind closed doors, an invisible imbalance persists.

It’s one thing to cook meals, clean, or care for children. It’s another to constantly keep it all in your head — to remember what needs to be done, plan it, coordinate it, and make sure it happens. That’s the third shift: the mental load of family life.

It includes everything from enrolling children in activities and buying the right equipment or clothing, to booking dentist appointments, organizing birthday gifts, checking school messages, planning dinner, monitoring shoe sizes, packing daycare bags, and remembering relatives’ needs. It’s a job that’s constant, exhausting, and essential, yet remains largely unrecognized and undervalued.

Recent Icelandic studies show that this unequal mental workload is often dismissed as a matter of “personal preference” — or even blamed on women themselves, portraying them as too controlling or unable to let go.

For single parents, this invisible labor doubles. And since most single parents are mothers, they shoulder both the second and third shifts alone. Even after separation, the expectation that mothers carry the mental and emotional load persists, while many fathers treat involvement as optional — “choosing” how much parenting or planning to take on.

The third shift keeps households, families, and society running — but until it’s shared equally, true gender equality will remain out of reach.
