FEMÍNISTAFÉLAGIÐ – The Feminist Society

Feminist Activism and Women’s Power

The story of the Feminist Society of Iceland (Femínistafélag Íslands) began in 2003. There was tension in the air. Elections were approaching, and there was widespread dissatisfaction with the state of gender equality issues. An email list, intended as a discussion forum for feminists, was established in February 2003. Sign-ups for the list exceeded all expectations, and within two weeks, around 200 feminists were registered. Subsequently, the demand for founding an official society grew louder. The founding meeting of the Feminist Society of Iceland was held on March 14, 2003, at the Miðbæjarskólinn schoolhouse. A follow-up founding meeting was held two weeks later, on April 1. With that, the society was formally established, and councils and groups were elected and formed. The society was dissolved in 2020.

During the History Walk, old issues of the struggle, which sadly all remain relevant today, will be recalled. Old slogans and actions from the fight will be revisited. These include actions against gender-based violence and the gender pay gap (kynjakrónan, literally „the gender crown“). The stereotype will also appear on-site, and passersby will be invited to try it on for size. The color pink will be dominant, as pink was the society’s hallmark color.
